A £31 million arts and entertainment centre has been given the go-aheadl by the council. Ambitious plans are afoot for the centre, to be based in Royal Arsenal and to include a 450 seat theatre, 600 seat outdoor amphitheatre, rehearsal studios and office space. These venues will be based alongside new cafes, bars and restaurants.

With the great future connections afforded by the new Crossrail line to Woolwich – it will provide an additional boost to the area and will provide facilities for creative groups including the Academy for Performing Arts, Chicken Shed, Dash Arts and Greenwich Dance.

Joyce Wilson, London Area Director, Arts Council England, said, "This is a tremendously exciting time for Woolwich, and I am truly delighted, and impressed, that the Royal Borough of Greenwich is such a strong champion for culture and heritage in the area. It is heartening that arts and culture remain so firmly at the centre of the borough's work in Woolwich.

"I am pleased that the Arts Council has been able to support this through our Cultural Destinations fund, ensuring that the development both celebrates the area and stays true to its community."
